St. Mary’s Stories of Faith Project

What is StoryCorps?

StoryCorps is an American non-profit organization whose mission is to record, preserve, and share the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs.

Public radio stations regularly feature StoryCorps audio excerpts. At the center of each StoryCorps podcast episode is a StoryCorps interview, a candid, unscripted conversation between two people about what’s really important in life: love, loss, family, friendship.

Thanks to StoryCorps DIY, organizations can use ready-made and tested resources–a StoryCorps audio recording app, training videos, and handouts– to create their own StoryCorps projects.

Our Goal

We seek to preserve St. Mary’s Stories of Faith, as told by church leaders and elders.  The StoryCorps process works well to bring multiple generations together for deep listening and meaningful interaction. Mature youth and adults will be paired with long-time parishioners and church leaders to capture stories. In this initial effort, we aim to capture 10-20 individual audio stories, which would be stored and shared online.

We anticipate beginning the training and storytelling preparation at the end of November and will record interviews in December in January, as volunteer schedules allow.

Recruit Storytelling Interview Participants

St. Mary’s  will invite individuals to tell us a single story from their faith journey. Following are a list of “big” questions to help an individual pick a story to tell. A person only needs to pick ONE.

  • Have you experienced any miracles?
  • Have you ever had a special friendship that has transformed you?
  • How has living with a chronic illness shaped you?
  • Do you remember a time when your faith was tested?
  • Is there a favorite story from singing in the choir/ praying/ participating in a St. Mary’s ministry or outreach event that sparks joy for you?
  • Every person has a cross to bear. What obstacle have you had to overcome in your life?
  • What was the most profound spiritual moment in your life?

Train Youth and Adults on StoryCorps Procedures

Several youth and adults have volunteered to help, but we could always use more volunteers! Email or

Volunteer time commitment

We will host a group 30–minute training session for volunteers. We’ll schedule the actual interview likely on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon at St. Mary’s–when both the storyteller and the volunteer have time available. The actual interview should be 20- 40 minutes.
