The care of children is a core value of our church. We see raising children as a gift and obligation given to us by God that requires the whole community. Below are our regular offerings for children to help with their spiritual growth and education.
Children’s Chapel: Age 4 through 3rd grade – The goal of Children’s Chapel is to teach our liturgy, to help our children know one another and their church community, and above all to worship God with joy. During the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services from September to June, Children’s Chapel is offered to children age 4 years-old through 3rd grade during the first part of the liturgy. The children leave right after the processional, following a priest to the Chapel. (Any latecomers are more than welcome to join their peers once Chapel has begun.) Here children begin their journey of faith learning the fundamentals of Episcopal worship. They can participate in many aspects: preparing the altar, discussing important themes in the Lessons and Gospel for that day and singing with their friends and a member of the Clergy each week. They rejoin the adults before communion and are encouraged to receive communion or a blessing with their parents. If you need assistance please ask an usher. For more information, contact Evelyn Hutton.
Nursery: Age birth to 3 years old – The nursery strives to provide a safe and fun environment for young children (ages newborn to three) to meet new friends and have fun while parents worship. Our nursery is available Sunday morning from 8:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. and is open for various events throughout the year. The children are in the care of professional sitters and parent volunteers. To find the nursery, just ask an usher. For more information, contact the church office.
Church School: Kindergarten through 5th grade – During the school year, St. Mary’s offers Church School at 10:15 a.m., for children from Kindergarten through 5th grade. During the summer months, Church School replaces chapel during the first portion of the worship service at 10:00 a.m. Our mission is to give the children of St. Mary’s a foundation of knowledge about the Christian faith. We use the Episcopal Children’s Curriculum, which covers the Old and New Testament, Church History and the Sacraments. Children are given age-appropriate activities that expand their knowledge and exploration of faith in a fun-filled environment. To register your child for church school, bring him or her to the age appropriate class, and the teacher will assist you. For more information, contact Evelyn Hutton.
Choirs for Boys and Girls – In the Treble Choir, boys and girls from kindergarten through 3rd grade make a joyful noise while learning about the singing voice, breath and musical notation. Older children and teens in the Boys and Girls Choir develop their skills as young musicians and leaders of the 9:00 a.m. liturgy and other services through the training program of the Royal School of Church Music and with yearly choir trips. To join this choir contact Dr. Gregory Hooker.
4th and 5th Grade gatherings – As our children transition from Elementary to Jr. High School we want to help them transition from Church School to the Jr. High ministry. Throughout the year we hold gatherings designed to be fun and to help our 4th and 5th graders prepare for their transition into Jr. High. For more information, contact Sue Cromer.
