Annual Parish Retreat

Save the Date for St. Mary’s Annual Parish Weekend at Shrine Mont!

We will be heading to the Mountain June 8-10, 2018.

Shrine Mont is located in Orkney Springs, VA (approximately 2 hours from the Washington DC metro area).

Take Route 66 West to I-81 South to Mt. Jackson (Exit #273). Turn left onto Rt. 703 (East), then right (South) on US 11, follow through town, turn right on Rt. #263 and follow 13 miles to Orkney Springs.

To take advantage of Shrine Mont and its beautiful surroundings you may arrive anytime on Friday.  The Welcome Desk on the front porch of the Virginia House (main building on your left when you enter Orkney Springs) will be open at 2:00 p.m. for registration.  This is where you will receive your room assignment(s), an information packet regarding the weekend’s events, nametags and your job for the weekend.  Dinner will be served in the Dining Hall from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Meals: Home style cooking in the Southern tradition, served in abundance, is a hallmark of Shrine Mont’s gracious hospitality. A bell rings to announce meals.  Meals are served buffet style. Dinner Friday through lunch on Sunday will be served in the Dining Hall.  Mealtimes are as follows:

  • Breakfast 8:00 a.m.
  • Lunch 12:30 p.m.
  • Dinner 5:30 p.m.

Snacks and Drinks:  Please bring any snacks and drinks you and your family would like to have between meals.  An ice machine and a soda machine are located behind the front porch of the Virginia House.

Front Porch Fellowship:  Friday and Saturday night there will be a “meet and greet” social hour on the front porch. Please bring beverages (non-alcoholic and alcoholic) and snacks to share.

Alcohol:  Adults over the age of 21 may bring and drink alcoholic beverages at Shrine Mont.  Please remember that many young people join us and that we must set an example.  Please bring any coolers into your room at night.

Shrine Mont is located in the mountains and the weather can fluctuate between 50 and 90 degrees on our early June parish weekend.  Please check the weather forecasts before packing, but it’s always a good idea to pack something for either extreme.  Some additional suggestions are:

  • Extra shoes, good walking shoes
  • Lots of extra clothes for kids, especially socks and shoes(they tend to get wet)
  • Swimsuits, pool towels, and pool toys
  • Flashlights
  • Bug spray and Sunscreen
  • Rain gear
  • Recreational equipment for basketball, tennis, softball, soccer, etc.
  • Fans (please bring a fan if the forecast is for warm weather)
  • Outdoor toys/super soakers
  • Fishing rods
  • Snacks, and drinks (non-alcoholic and alcoholic); plastic cups and accessories
  • Coolers (ice machine on site)
  • Playing cards
  • A good book or other reading material
  • Extra pillows
  • Water bottles
  • Outdoor folding chairs
  • Baby gates/baby monitor
  • Pack and Play
  • Stroller
  • Digital camera
  • Your stash of clean jokes and improve games to share during Saturday night’s Improv Extravaganza.

There are phones available for guests in the hotel lobby area.  A prepaid calling card or your long-distance carrier pin # is needed for dialing long distance. The Virginia House, where we eat our meals, now offers complimentary wireless Internet access (wifi). There is limited to no cell phone service on the mountain.  Some cell phones may work in certain locations on the grounds (the large grass playing field behind the Virginia House generally offers some reception for Verizon customers), but you may have to hunt for the right location for your carrier’s signal.  Shrine Mont’s telephone number is (540) 856-2141.  Messages will be taken by Shrine Mont staff and provided to St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s has worked with Shrine Mont to provide extended pool time on Sunday afternoon.  The pool will be open and staffed from 1-3pm Sunday afternoon for your enjoyment and relaxation.  Please note that you must be checked out of your room prior to using the pool.  There are restrooms at the pool that can be used for changing.

Please join us for a Saturday evening of improv, humor, and laughs. Bring your collection of clean jokes, improv games, and skits- plus your dancing moves for the dance party after the improv fun.

We are looking forward to sharing a wonderful weekend with you.  If you have any questions, please contact anyone on the committee.
